I often refer to people of color as African Americans. I was just told by an African American that I should stop calling them that because it is stupid and wrong because no one is from Africa and I don't refer to people who originally descended from England as English Americans. She said I should refer to African Americans as black people.
I used to refer to people of color as black people, but one day I was in a college class speaking about MLK and referred to him as a black leader. Another student in the class immediatley scolded me saying, "Don't call us black people! That is racist! To call us black people means you are categorizing us by our skin color which is wrong. You should refer to us as African Americans."
I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape over this. I'm a minority and don't get offended unless someone is trying to be derogratory. How can I reference black or African American people without offending them?

well different people have different views on such matters, i am black and i really don't care how you refer to me as long as it is in a non-derrogatory way. and ya know you should not have to choose your words so darn carefully that you know don't what to call somebody. if that is the case, what should i call a white person? and will they get mad if i say "white" instead of Eurpean-American?
Reply:I prefer being called "Black", I have never seen Africa, and have only lived in America. I guess I like being called "Black" because I'm proud of having dark skin. I never say I'm mixed with African American and Filipino. I only say Black and Filipino.

Reply:Don't worry about it. It varies from person to person, I'm black and it's cool to call me black. I just dont like it when people are like "go tell that white guy to come over here" or "tell that asian kid to move" things of this nature. Can't you just say, Tell that guy to come over here. Or tell that kid to move without throwing their race into the mix? And as far as "*****" goes, It's only and should only be used predominently by black people, because ancestors were called "*******" during the slave era and we took this word that meant such hate and disgust and flipped it around to mean my friend. So this being said, only black people and people growing up in predominently black neighboorhoods with black friends and things such as this should use the word. But still, if you go to another place and those people don't know where you come from then you're using at your own risk. But I personally think the word shouldn't be used at all.

We African-Americans are individuals-- just like every other race. One African-American may think one way, while another may think a different way. How are Social people and Shy people able to live in the same city?
I don't get it.. shy people like are hated, are thought of as useless. Then, loud social people do their parties, going out etc.. and so, shy people and social people live in different worlds and many times we don't mix. So how is it that we are able to live in the same society? I don't think it's effective as shy people are far away from the social structuress that businesses and family create( Businesses want outgoing , confident people. To have a family you need to be confident to date etc and meet people. also , you must help your parents and take care of the household)
Nothing is being done about it, and nothing can be done about it. So we're left with a city that's full of outgoing people hanging out with themselves.. and shy people dyiing out in depression

I am a 13 year old teenage girl.
I hate how people at my school tend to stick with others of their own race just to fit in.
I hang with all different kinds of people, and I think it's stupid how people try to form little racial cliques.
I would like everyone to notice that popular or unpopular, within your race, or not, we can all get along.
So I came up with this plan:
I am going to introduce the 'populars' to the 'average' people.
I know they can all get along. They are just afraid to.
So...
how do you think I could go about doing this? I am going to start next year in eighth grade, because it is the end of the school year. I am already getting known (I always had potential to be 'popular', but now I go out of my way. That's why people know me all of a sudden), but do you have any other ideas to how I could meet more people next year?

Reply:well actually teens are some of the most racial accepting people in the world. my group at school is one of the most ethnically diverse there is at my school. i'm white/native american, my friend is from the marshall islands(she's pacific islander), and my two other friends are mexican and they could have something else in them too but idk.

Your new mission in live is probably as old as time itself. Trying to get different types of people to coincide in nothing new. Since the biblical times people "stayed with their own groups". Its human nature. It depends on background experiences and the way you are raised.
Look at it this way, what if you had a real bad experience with a person from a specific ethnic/religion/nationality? Would you still be comfortable with that specific type of person?
Look at America, they claim Muslims blew up the twin towers and already people are excluding them from everything and blaming them for everything that is going wrong. Of course they will start staying within their own group of people.
Psychologically people will become "racist" to a specific group that is constantly discriminating against them and will raise their children in the same way.
Like I said it depends on different aspects, many people will agree with you, but many will also disagree.

People and their loved one in a nursing home?
people that that put their loved ones in nurseing homes let me tell you something,first of all if your going to put them in there, then go see them often and never go at the same time ,and if there is something you dont like speak up and let the nursing home staff have it , but first find out whose fault it is. and this is for every body in every city big or little,but listen to this please, for those people that are in small cities who are still in school and really anywhere in your small towns alot of your CNA's are people who cant or dont want to go out of their town to find work are mostly the people who take care of your family member, so before you become a bully in your school or work place just remember who might be taking care of them or you later on.this is the truth. im not saying every cna is like this , iv worked in a nursing home and ive always had a heart for old people but ive worked with peoples grandparents, mothers, fathers ect... and so has other people who i know.

It is very true that the main problem is that there is never enough staff to care for your loved ones the way they should be cared for. This is a huge problem. Please people get together and let your politicians know that they need to change the laws that require so few to take care of so many. Nursing home execs are going to continue to hire only the amount required by law to stay "in compliance" . Until they raise the requirements it is not gonna change. I have seen many family members upset because mom didn't recieve adequate care. The truth was that there was one cna in charge of a hall with 23 residents!! But administration will tell them "we were in compliance"and they were. For example if you have a home with 54 residents, I believe you have to have 6 licensed personal on a 3-11 shift. Administration will count the charge nurse(sometimes two) and the med aide, that leaves 3 cna's to take care of 54 people! Also if a cna calls in they will use mrs. secratary down the hall if she is certified, leaving 2 cna's!. This happens all the time. But of course they are still "in compliance". Instead of griping at the cna's who are working their butts off to do an impossible job, scream at the politicians and demand more help!!! I am a very compassionate person and it is heart wrenching to see someone lay in urine or develope bed sores because they are not being cared for properly. And if at any time you see or hear of any kind of abuse, report it to the state immediately.
Reply:When it comes to the care of loved ones and even other people's loved ones, a concerned individual can make the biggest difference whether it be someone on the inside looking in or someone on the outside looking in. Any and everything could be considered suspect and then again when it comes to the sick and frail, any and everything could not be suspect. A trained eye, an individual with a conscience and an individual that cares, who observes anything that they feel is inappropriate in a nursing home atmosphere, should bring it to someone's attention. You have not posed a question, but your statement is very profound, if you know something, tell someone, it might mean the life or death of someone's loved one. God Bless.
Reply:My sister, at the age of 47, had an aneurysm and a massive stroke. That was about 8 years ago, and she is "still" in a nursing home today. All she can say is "I you." I love her so very much, and it hurts so bad in my heart that this happened to her. The first nursing home she was in was disgusting! I drove 8 hours to see her, and wanted to hurt the scumbag who was taking care of her that day. I told this woman that my sister needed to have her diaper and her bedding changed
right away. This woman said, "no, not untill your sister has had lunch." I said no, she needs to be changed NOW! This woman came at me, got in my face, and said NO! I will not change her till after lunch, and if you don't like it, leave! I told her to leave the room, called her supervisor, and had her fired that day. When I went out to my car, all four tires were flat on my car. I found out where this scumbag lived, and had her arrested, pressed charges, and she was sent "back" to
Mexico. These unfeeling jerks come in every color, race, background, ect. It takes a very caring person to care for these people in nursing homes, but a lot of places hire just anyone, because they are understaffed....how sad. I had my sister moved to a better, cleaner place, where they care for her a lot better. So I totally understand what you're saying.
Reply:I'll never forget the time I worked in a nursing home and a resident would play totally helpless but only when her daughter would visit. So one day her daughter thought she was going to jump a nurse about her mother who was whining about her not being able to feed herself. The nurse told the daughter when she's not there her mother never complains and does everything herself. The daughter smarted off to the nurse and told her, "So what are you saying? That I shouldn't visit my mother?" The nurse told her, "You can do whatever you want. I'm just telling you the facts." That shut the daughter up.

I've worked for 10 yrs in a nursing home and let me tell you a few things you might not know. first of all there is never enough staff. 2nd, cnas are so under paid its ridiculous. once I had to feed 4 patients at once. management does not care about your loved ones. except to get your loved ones in the door. no one fights for us. I was a very caring caregiver while at a nursing facility. I now work in a hospital and the staffing situation is the same here. all nurses do is pass out meds. aides do all the dirty work with mostly no thanks. the pay scale is still at the bottom. I do my job because I love it. will you please fight for us? aides should not have any more than 6 patients we have 12. like I said, walk in our shoes for a day, maybe then you will see how hard we work being a PCA. we not only bathe your mom, we listen to her cry because no one comes to see her. we change her soiled pants and we hug her at night and tell her it will be o.k. we give them CPR if needed. we are the ones holding them as they are dying. so please don't condemn us. fight for us so we can take better care of your loved ones.

I just took a look at the points leader here in yahoo answers. It’ amazing that the leading person has 138,842 points. Some other guy has answered 39,622 questions. Can you believe that? What do these people do for a living? I imagine that these people have no real live outside Yahoo.
I was watching the news today and they mentioned that some studies suggest that people can become hooked on electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops and other similar devices. These people experience withdrawal symptoms just like some drug addicts experience. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swing and the like. But that is true also for people who watch a lot of TV.
Could these people be hooked on Yahoo Answers? I imagine that it must consume an incredible amount of their time to reply to so many questions. There has to be something wrong with this people. Am I the only one to thinks so? I mean, does it look normal to you? In my opinion, some of these people need some help...bad!!!

yes, i think being addicted to electronics is no different than being addicted to drugs. some people give up things in their life like spending time with family and friends and basic necessities like eating and sleeping just to be on the computer or playing video games. i think i am one of those electronics addicts. but i dont know what to do to get help for myself :(
Reply:My guess is they are on Yahoo answers WHILE they are at work! Because some jobs are so boring you have to kill about 6 out of the 8 hours! It beats standing outside and smoking and drinking coffee!

I can't imagine life without it and need a regular fix every day. When I moved to Mexico, I had to wait more than a month for my computer to arrive. I nearly went crazy.
The only thing I worry about if I were to get in trouble with the law is, would they take away my computer?
On the other hand, I don't have a TV. I probably spend as much time on-line as some people spend watching TV.
I suppose we could start an on-line support group, ha, ha! What would we call it? Get a life anonymous?

Do you think that over weight-fat people should be placed in their own "group" since 99% of over weight people are discriminated against and put through hate crimes and get rude remarks/ treated as 'Not Normal, Not Human, A waste of space."

No, I don;t think overweight people should be placed in their own group. I hate to say it but, if anyone has the perception of an overweight person and makes the remarks as you have described, then they should be placed in their own group and labelled as "Inhumane, Discriminate MORONS. anyone who treats people badly based on race or anything else for that matter should be banned from public!
I myself do not consider myself fat or thin, but I am sure there are probably some out there that would lean towards fat remarks pertaining to my size. But you know what, I don't give a flying ---- about it. I am comfortable with who I am in every aspect. I am a strong, independent, intelligent woman and anyone who thinks differently or tries to tell me differently will get a quarter thrown to them so that they can call someone who cares about their opinion.
Obviously from your questions you have been victimised. I will give you the same advice my grandmother always told me.
Always stand up straight and walk tall because you have every reason to. You are a beautiful and intelligent person and no one can break you. They may bend you but they will never break you. Be who you are and love who you are. Nothing else matters.
