Why do people still confuse psychotic disorders/mental illness with intellectual disabilities?

It's like when you tell someone that you have a psychotic disorder (like: schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, etc.) they think that it's the same as an intellectual disability or formally known as mental retardation? Yes, it's possible for people to have both, but why do people think that people with psychotic disorder can't function? Most can function like normal people if they are on medication. Even some people that are not on medication can function as long as they do not have a severe version of the disorder.

I have nothing against those with intellectual disabilities, but I'm sick of people expecting me to foam at the mouth when I say I have something. Plus, I have met a lot of people with intellectual disabilities and they can function perfectly fine too. Why can't people let go of complete BS?

Why do people still confuse psychotic disorders/mental illness with intellectual disabilities?
because their idiots and they don't know so they assume everything with an illness is mental and call them retards, i hate them 2 words so much
Reply:You give people credit for being more intelligent than they really are. lol

I have OCD and am bi-polar. I agree with what you're saying and have experienced this sort of reaction from people as well. Even doctors treat me like I am "slow". "Oh, you poor, sick, stupid thing." I quickly squash that. :)

I may be ill, but I am FAR from being "slow". I am able to walk, talk, eat with utensils and bathe myself.

Imagine that!

Ignorance is certainly NOT bliss.
Reply:personally and simply I would l say "total ignorance"

When I went for SSD review by a dr. suffering from Major Depression. I was asked if I am so depressed how can I drive or do cognitive skills like math, etc. I said "because I am depressed not retarded!!" I was pissed.
