Coloring pages of disabled people, why were so many so rude?

Someone asked a perfectly legit question the other day. They asked where to find pictures of disabled people for children to color. People were rude and acted like this was wrong.

What is wrong with recognizing that disabled people are, first and foremost, people? People with inborn beauty that can be celebrated as much as anyone else's?

What can be wrong with letting our children know this?

What can be wrong with letting disabled children see books and pictures where people with similar challenges are shown in a positive light?

What is wrong with all the people who seemed to think this teacher was putting disabled people down by teaching kids to respect them?

Having kids learn about disabilities is a good thing.

People with disablities are not an ugly thing that should be hidden away!

Please, if you are one of the people who were rude, answer this question, why?

Why did you act that way?

Were you never taught that people with disabilities are just people, like you?

Coloring pages of disabled people, why were so many so rude?
I totally disagree that children or anyone for that matter should be shown photos of "heroic" disabled people. Yes some disabled people have made great achievements but I for one am tired of hearing "if they can do it why cant you?".

WHY use the minority, a very small and elite group of disabled people to teach about disabilities? That does not tell the true story of disabilities.

It give a misrepresentation of disabled people. Very few of us are heros or have the ability to wheel across the country. Its hard for anyone to believe someone like Rick Hanson has ever had to struggle to keep a roof over his head, or to gain access to public buildings.

If children in other countries are taught benevolance, kindness and understanding why shouldnt children living in so-called "western" countries also be? IMO its past due, education about disabled, just as racism, and bullying has to start in grade school.

What better way than to colour a picture and then talk about it with young students? "How do you think the person in this wheelchair feels?" "Do you think she is a mommy?" "How do you feel when you see someone who is disabled?" "How are the disabled different from the rest of us who can run and play?" "Do you know any disabled people?" etc.

Its a really good idea.
Reply:what was the question? could u post it here and who asked it so i can see it

thanx
Reply:I got to agree with you on this... I am deaf myself as well.. As I was reading those posts.. I been treated rudely or feeling sorry by others. also people with disablitlies also can be rude as well which by my expricnces I was been rude by people who are deaf or hard of hearing as well and other kind of disablitlies. So yea.. more like asking why people with disablitlies be rude to other disablies people as well.
Reply:You sounded very upset in your question. Take a deep breath and relax................Is that better? Good, now to go on.

I think people may have misunderstood your question. They may have thougth that you were giving pictures for people with disability to colour in as if you are treating them like children and that you think people with a disability are only capable of such childish and simple task.

Another thing to understand is NEVER take everything on Y!A too seriously and personally. There will be some (disabled or not) who will come here to be angry with the world and will abuse evrything and everyone. Some will come here just for fun and say stupid things. Some will come here to hoping to change the world (according to their standard). You don't know the personal exprience, values, attitude, maturity or AGE of the answerers. Don't take it to heart.

My only concern about your request is that I don't like the idea of pictures of people with disability ONLY on the colouring sheets. The pictures should be of group of people doing everyday things (eg children in palyground) and the picture includes one or two people with some sort of disability. That is better than having "disability" pictures only as this likely to promote SEGREGATION - focusing disabiity as different to the rest of the community.

I hope this helps
Reply:Well, even for me the idea is a little weird and we need to understand the difference between celebrating this difference and recognizing we need to correct problems. Unlike other types of different people, these people can't find joy or celebration because their differences causes them great pain, it's sort of like getting someone who has cancer temporarily to be joyous and be proud of it.

You don't exactly want to be proud of something that gives you great physical or mental pain.

I'm all for giving these people respect, but at the same time we should still work on cures to rid these problems.
Reply:it was the wording I know that you were not meaning any harm but kids usually color pics of animals or muppets or objects not people with disablities. I think it would be better if you showed the kids influencial people with disablities lile stephen hawking or harriet tubman who had narcoleptcy. So that you expose kids to the fact that there are real people like this not just in books.
Reply:I didnt answer your earlier post as I wasnt aware of any such sites.

However some replies did sound rude. That is because the earlier post lacked clarity.

Pictures of the disabled were wanted which were to be coloured in by children. If the reason had also aslo been added, for example- to educate children about different kinds of disabilities etc , it would have made more sense to people who got defensive.
