People who cannot interact with society?

People with no friends at all? People who can't get jobs because of interviews? People like me.

I have Asperger's Syndrome %26amp; social anxiety. I try so hard to socially function normally, but it only takes one conversation/interview with somebody before they determine that they want nothing to do with me.

I think I have so much to offer people - intelligence (especially regarding math, science, and creative writing), a willingness to work hard, %26amp; a sense of humor (that I only show to people I know well).... but I never get the opportunity to do that, because I can't even have a conversation with someone without people thinking there's something wrong with me.

I'm 18 years old, and I feel like a burden on society. Years of therapy has not done any good. I interact with people every day, but I never improve. I'm contemplating ending my life since I'm a drain on society. But is it possible for a reject to be a productive citizen?

People who cannot interact with society?
There is a famous animal psychologist who has Asperger's syndrome. She has done phenomenal work in understanding how to make meat processing more humane. You have a unique perspective on life (as we all do, but yours is rarer). You will indeed find a niche. I would begin to research your syndrome more and learn what types of occupations are suited to your unique viewpoint. I know people with your condition, and the unique perspective Asperger's gives someone is fascinating and worthwhile.
Reply:I suggest you read the questions under mental health and psychology and read some of "le fantome omega's" questions. It's avatar has a guy with headphones on. He has questions that may be helpful to you but more extreme. Do that right now.

It takes practice and it's easier said than done because i have similar problem and don't feel i fit in with society nor do i even like society. But i try my best because i believe i can achieve what i set out to do despite my depression and seeming to be lazy or is it the bi polar speaking now. either way you've got to believe in yourself and practice.
Reply:you cant overcome an issue unless you face it out over and over,im so tired of people using mental disorders asperger's Syndrome etc etc as an excuse not to do or attempt things.Every second person now has some mental disorder label to use to get them out of taking responsiblity for their life.Do you think there is anyone 100 years ago who said i cant lift this bale of hay because i'm an aspie.Stop classifying yourself. You may find it harder then others but the minute you stop thinking of yourself as socially handicapped and go into an interview knowing who you are and your value you wont have any problems.

Do you seriously think there is anyone in the universe who goes into an interview without sweaty palms and general panic?? please.
Reply:You are not a reject! Maybe you just haven't found the right job for you. You're only 18 years old, so being young might be one of the reasons for rejection, not the Asperger's. I don't even have Asperger's, but believe me, I have been rejected numerous times on job interviews. You can't take it personally, because it doesn't mean that you are a loser, it means that for whatever reason (a more qualified applicant, etc) you weren't right for that job. Do not attempt suicide because then you will never find your place in society, and you do have one. It is just rare for people to find their niche when they are 18. Hang in there, kid!

ok, pple have to see that to trust with a job. they gotta know u r capable of the job....that's the whole point of interviews...

my guess is u r showing ur capabilities to pple you do not need to show them to. try showing them to pple u do not know...during ur job interviews u will be surprised at the responses u will get!
Reply:A drain on society? Do you realize how many people you've already enlightened tonight?
Reply:Hey D!

I think it is great that you keep putting yourself out there for interviews! That is fantastic. Keep it up, eventually you'll find the right position for you.

Aspergers and Social Anxiety can be difficult to deal with, but you can deal with it effectively. Are you a member of a support group? If not, find one quick! (Link below) They might be able to help you find a job.

If you live near a junior college - AND can deal with people one on one (I assume you can since you interact with people every day)- contact the DSPS (Disabled Student Services) or EOPS department and see if they might be hiring tutors. (Be sure to explain your issue - preferably via e-mail before you meet / speak with them) They usually need someone with math / science skills to help their students on a one to one basis. This might even help you to improve your ability to communicate with others.

Otherwise, try to find a place where you can volunteer your time. Maybe somewhere that might eventually have a full time job available. St. Vincent DePaul or the Salvation Army come to mind - and you could get first dibs on coll second hand stuff if you work at the thrift stores.

Hang in there and good luck!
